Garden Math 4-5

At Stepp Orchard, Ms. Marshall has twice as many Red Delicious trees as McIntosh trees and 1/4 as many  Gala trees as Red Delicious trees. Four times as many Mutsu trees as Gala trees are in the orchard. There are twice as many golden Delicious trees as there are McIntosh and Gala together. The orchard has 4 McIntosh trees. How many apple trees are in the orchard altogether? Explain your approach to the problem.
( This problem is fictional. Wilbur is sure Stepp Orchard has more trees than this problem represents. Check out the link to Stepp Farms.       http://www.steppapples.com/?page_id=43

There are 34 apple trees in the orchard. We made a chart with type of apples, the clues, and the number of those trees. We wrote down the clues for each apple, and figured out the numbers using those clues. 2, 8, 4, 12, and 8 added up to 34 apple trees.

  2. I got 34 because we had to divide the gala and the red delisous and got 2 then we had to divide mcintosh times two and got 8 then mcl was 4 the gala and the delisos times it by 2 and got 12 the we had to times the gala by 4 and got 8 again. Then we added the numbers and got 34.

The answer to our problem was 34 apple trees. Our strategy was we did a three column chart that was labeled like this .Kind of apple/Clues/#of.

The answer to Wilburs problem is 34 because we took the problem step by step and made it easy to answer. We solved it by making a chart and filling it out with clues from the text which is a strategy that we have learned to help us with almost everything!:)

We think that the answer to this problem is 34, because there are 4 McIntosh apples, the problem states that Mrs. Marshall has 8 red delicious apples, 2 gala apples, 12 golden delicious apples and 8 mutsu apples.
