Mr. Schofield planted 5 packs of zinnia seeds. Two packs had 20 seeds each. Two packs had 34 seeds each and one pack has 27 seeds. How many seeds did he plant?
Wilbur, We figured out how many seeds were in all five of Mrs. Schofield's packs of zinnias. The answer we got was 135 seeds. We used a T-chart and made an number string to show our work.
We used our mental math strategies to add some of the numbers. We knew that 20 + 20 was 40. We also knew that 34 doubled was 68. We used our knowledge of tens and ones to add the numbers in the ones place. 8+7+0=15. That gave us another group of ten. So that 10+20+40+60= 130. So we added our tens and ones back together to get a total of 135 seeds. Wow! Mr. Schofield has a lot of planting to do. Tell him we said hello. Let us know if you need any more help with your math, Wilbur. We will be happy to share our strategies.
Can I help.I have a graden at home.
